Sun Awareness Week
12 - 18 May 2025
Why Sun Awareness Matters
Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the UK, with both melanoma and non-melanoma cases on the rise. Alarmingly, nearly 90% of melanoma cases could be prevented through proper sun protection and by avoiding sunbeds.
Sun Safety Tips
To minimise the risk of sun damage, especially between mid-March and mid-October when UV levels are higher in the UK, consider the following guidelines:
- Seek Shade: Stay in the shade during peak sun intensity hours, typically between 11 am and 3 pm.
- Cover Up: Wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and a 4-star UVA rating. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
- Monitor the UV Index: When the UV Index is 3 or higher, sun protection becomes essential.
Special Considerations for Children
Children's skin is particularly sensitive to UV radiation:
- Infants Under 6 Months: Keep them out of direct sunlight entirely.
- Older Children: Ensure they wear protective clothing, stay in the shade during peak hours, and use at least SPF 30 sunscreen.
Recognizing Skin Cancer: The ABCDEs
Early detection of melanoma is crucial. Use the ABCDE guide to monitor moles and skin changes.
- Asymmetry: One half doesn't match the other.
- Border: Edges are irregular or blurred.
- Colour: Varied shades within the same mole.
- Diameter: Larger than 6mm.
- Evolving: Changes in size, shape, or colour.
If you notice any of these signs, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
