MRSA infections are rising...but you can help prevent it

Meticillin‑Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that many people carry harmlessly on their skin or in their nose. It only becomes a problem if it enters the body through cuts, wounds, or medical devices. The most effective way to stop MRSA spreading is through good hand hygiene and simple everyday precautions.

How you can help prevent MRSA spreading

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol gel.
  • Keep cuts and wounds clean and covered with a dressing.
  • Do not share personal items such as towels or razors.
  • Remind healthcare staff or visitors to clean their hands before and after contact.
  • Keep your surroundings clean and tidy to reduce bacteria on surfaces.

If you have MRSA

You may be advised to use a special antibacterial body wash or nasal ointment for a short course to reduce MRSA on the skin. Follow all instructions carefully and speak to a clinician if you have any questions.
